5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Tank Water Heater

Like any appliance in your home, a tank water heater will eventually break down after some time. You’ll inevitably have to replace it, but you likely want to get your replacement before it causes major damage. If you know what signs to look for, you can know the best time to get a new water heater.

Here are 5 signs your tank water heater is on its way out:

Age

How long have you owned your water heater? The average tank water heater lasts 10 to 15 years. If your heater is reaching the double digits, it might be getting time to put it out to pasture. You can check the water heater’s serial number if you’re unsure of how old it is. For instance, a serial number starting with ‘0702’ would mean it was made July (07) 2002.

Rusty or muddy water

If your water is a rusty color, that might be a sign the water tank is starting to deteriorate on the inside. When the tank corrodes, rust tends to develop around the tank seams, the temperature and pressure release valves, the water supply line, or the drain valve. If the water is muddy, it’s a sign of sediment build-up in the tank.

Leaking water tank

If there’s standing or leaking water around the tank, call one of our professionals right away. The tank could be experiencing an internal failure. There’s no easy fix for this, and you’ll have to replace the tank quickly in order to avoid damage to your home. Make sure you disconnect the electricity or turn off the gas and let the water cool before you remove and replace the tank.

Strange noises

Some noise is normal when a tank water heater is operating. However, if you hear cracks and pops, that’s a problem. Noise issues are generally the result of a buildup of sediment in the tank. As the sediment heats and reheats, it’ll eventually harden at the bottom of the tank. The noises are caused by pockets of the air in the sediment boiling along with the tank’s water. Flushing the tank should clean it, but if the noise persists, your tank might be close to cracking or leaking.

Not enough hot water

Another problem sediment can cause is a lack of hot water. The sediment that builds up on the bottom gets between the burner and the water. This results in colder showers and a harder-working heating element. Eventually, the heater will fail and possibly cause a leak. An annual water tank flushing can alleviate the issue, and consider investing in water conditioning if you have hard water.

Water Heater Replacement in Prior Lake

Are you looking for a water heater replacement in Prior Lake? Then you came to the right place! At Water Heaters Now, we specialize in water heater installations and repairs. It’s all we do! So when we got a call for a water heater replacement in Prior Lake, we were ready to jump into action.

Tom called Water Heaters Now because his old atmospheric vent water heater was leaking into his basement. This was a large residential unit with a 50-gallon tank that had reached the end of its lifespan. The unit was beyond repairs and needed to be replaced with an updated, more efficient model.

Before the Water Heater Replacement

Unfortunately for Tom, this failure resulted in a flooded basement and a loss of hot water to his home. When he called in, we asked Tom to shut off the gas and water to the unit which he did before our arrival. It’s dangerous to leave the water hooked up to a broken unit because it will continue to leak. This allows more water damage and the possibility of greater property damage. If gas is left on and the unit isn’t firing properly, it can be a serious fire hazard for your family. Thankfully, Tom quickly shut the gas and water lines down to his old water heater. Our team was able to begin work as soon as we arrived.

After We Removed the Old Water Heater

During the Water Heater Replacement

Our team arrived at the home ready to get this family back into hot water that same day. The first step in this water heater replacement in Prior Lake was to finish draining the unit. Once it was completely emptied, our crew removed the broken unit and hauled it away free of charge. The failed water heater left a pretty nasty mess behind in the home, so our crew cleaned the entire area before beginning to install the new water heater.

Power Vent vs. Direct Vent Water Heaters

Here at Water Heaters Now, we fully understand how hard it can be to choose a water heater. There are so many different types to choose from! Two of the most popular water heaters are the direct vent and the power vent. What are the differences between the two? Which one should I choose? Let Water Heaters Now give you the information you need to make an informed decision!

Direct Vent

Direct vent water heaters vent their exhaust gasses through a chimney or exhaust pipe leading out of the house. Since the exhaust is lighter than cool air, it rises naturally up through the vent outside. Since it doesn’t require any additional power, direct vent water heaters tend to have cheaper heating costs. However, it has strict requirements on where it can be placed due to the requirement of an exhaust pipe.

Power Vent

Power vent water heaters use a fan or blower to help remove exhaust gasses from the heater. This setup lets gasses be pushed through horizontal exhaust pipes. This makes the setup more flexible since you aren’t restrained by needing a chimney. Power vent heaters also don’t have to worry about backdraft unless the vent has a problem.

However, there are some drawbacks. Because they need more to run (electricity, wiring, and parts,) they’ll cost more overall. Speaking of electricity, the water heater won’t run if the fan has no electricity. Power vent water heaters can also be noisy, which may be a problem for some people.

Which one is better?

It’s hard to say which one is better. The primary factor on which one to choose depends on your access to a vertical vent or chimney. If you do, you’ll have some choice in the matter. If not, you’ll most likely be using a power vent water heater. Still unsure about which to choose? Ask one of the professionals at Water Heaters Now to help you out!
